What a long trip it’s been and I am back, ready to go!
I took an unexpected “longer than I wanted to” break from Black Dog Bakehouse. I moved back to Michigan in June of 2019 and put the bakery on hold intending to start back up within 6 months. Well crazy things happened and COVID was the first hindrance, kitchen remodel was the second, finding a home was the 3rd and then my father passed away in December 2021. After a year of searching for a new home, I finally have one in Michigan. I am settled, unpacked, painted and ready to get your pups some happy treats!
While I was away, this happened. Meet Benji.

He came to me most unusually. I received an email from a gift shop that I had visited in 2006. I managed to get on their email list when I inquired about their shop being for sale. That was 2 years ago. I saw his photo and called the rescue the minute I saw that sweet face. They gave me the rundown. He was the longest resident at the shelter, being there since early December 2021. He was a pittie mix and 7 years old. His reason for surrendering was that he had high anxiety and separation issues. He was on medication and the owner didn’t want to pay for it anymore. ( As some of you remember, Guinness had Addison’s disease and in the last year of his life I spent more than $15K on his health care, so I have no sympathy ). I spoke with the foster and said that he did have some anxiety issues, but nothing too severe. I made arrangements to meet him the following Saturday. I got to the shelter, spoke with the manager and waited for the foster to bring him. I saw him and it was love at first sight. I wasn’t leaving without him. That was March 5th.
Now the even more intriguing part was the fact that it was close to March 17th and they were having St. Pitties Day adoptions. That meant that adoption fees for adult dogs…were free! I lost Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018, coincidence, nope! Did I mention that my new REMOTE job started on March 7th? Yeah, if there was anything that was meant to me, this was it! He moved right into my home, my bed and my heart. Punk!
So here I am 6 months later and ready to get back in the kitchen and start baking. I have decided to switch things up a little and do a little rebranding and website modifications. Don’t worry, the same yummy treats, still made to order, still the best dang things EVER!
Stay tuned for more Black Dog Bakehouse updates. Ready to start September 1, 2022!!!
Happy Wags,
Joan and Benji
