Keeping Pets Safe on the 4th of July.

More pets go missing on the 4^th of July than any other day of the year. Let’s keep our pets safe this holiday with these few simple tips.

Make sure your pet’s tags are up to date and that a collar is visible at all times.
Have your pet micro-chipped and chip information up to date.
Have a current photo of your dog just in case they get out.
Walk your pet early in the morning before the fireworks and parties begin. (Remember the 4^th of July festivities may span more than one day).
Keep pets away from open flames from the grill, campfires and fireworks.
Keep pets away from tempting foods that are harmful to them and keep treats on hand if your guests want to give your pets food.
Place notes on exit doors and gates that need to remain closed and remind guests that you have pets in the area that need to be safe.
Leave your pet at home in the basement or a secure area with soft music and a stuffed Kong during fireworks. (See a resource link below).

Keep horses and livestock in secured, fenced areas as far away from the noise and festivities as possible.
Remember that heat and humidity can be harmful to your pet. Make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water. Don’t leave them outside for extended periods of time in hot weather.
Assign a family member to be mindful of your pet’s anxiety triggers and have an action plan in place for their safety.
After the celebration, make sure all fireworks debris and party leftovers are picked up before you let your pet out in the yard or pastures.
