Pet Insurance

If you would have asked me 3 years ago if I thought pet insurance was a good idea, I would have told you probably not.

This morning I opened my Care Credit bill and there is a balance of $2300 for vet bills for Guinness.  Yes I am still paying on them and it’s been almost a year.  It breaks my heart and reminds me of the struggles to keep him healthy and it also reminds me of the loss of my best friend.

Guinness had Addison’s disease.  Addison’s disease is a hormonal disorder that is caused by a deficient production of the adrenal gland hormones cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol is a hormone that helps your dog combat stress and aldosterone helps regulate water and electrolytes in the body.  Every month he needed a Percorten injection to keep his electrolyte levels in balance so if he was in a stressful situation he wouldn’t go into shock.  These injections were $150-$160 per month.  Those injections along with his medications, acupuncture, massages, supplements and overnight stays at vet hospitals took its toll on my finances.  I stopped counting vet bills at $13,000 for 15 months of care.

As you probably figured out my thoughts about pet insurance have changed.  If you ask me now if pet insurance is a good idea I would tell you yes.

There are quite a few pet insurance companies to choose from.  Do some research and talk to your vet about possible options and their experience with pet insurance companies.  Pick one you feel comfortable with and ask questions about coverage a care.  Your pet will thank you.

Have a great day,

Joan
