What a long gap in between postings. Forgive me for that but I have been quite productive during that time. I completed the Feline Nutrition portion of my Clinical Pet Nutrition Program studies. I was finally able to purchase Dr. Karen Becker’s book Real Food for Health Dogs & Cats for the course and I love how simple it is to prepare foods for our pets. In her book she says, “The truth is, food is just food. There’s no ‘dog food,’ ‘people food,’ ‘cat food,’ ‘bird food’ – it’s all just food, with the balance and ingredients differing depending on the species.” This couldn’t be simpler.
I’ve written about food add-ins for dogs before but it’s so important that it’s worth repeating.
So here is my New Year assignment for you. Add some fresh, healthy foods to your diet each day and add some to your pet’s diet too. And no, McDonald’s French fries are not a healthy snack. Remember to introduce them slowly to avoid stomach upset. Here is a list of some great snacks:
Dogs
Carrots
Sweet potatoes
Green peppers
Blueberries
Green beans
Low fat cottage cheese
Canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
Cooked brown rice
Cantaloupe (1 or 2 1” cubes)
Watermelon (1 or2 1” cubes)
Cats
Egg yolk (lightly cooked)
Turkey (lightly cooked)
Chicken (lightly cooked)
Sardines (no more than once a week)
Meat only treats (no grains or gluten)
Freeze dried fish nuggets
Happy snacking, Joan
